What Is a Trench Drain?

A trench drain is a linear surface drainage channel, generally similar to a channel drain but often built to handle larger volumes of water or heavier surface loads, commonly used in driveways, garage entrances, and commercial applications.

The construction is essentially the same concept as a channel drain: a trench topped with a durable grate, capturing surface water and carrying it away through connected piping.

Because trench drains are frequently installed where vehicles will drive over them, the grate material and structural support beneath often need to handle considerably more load than a purely pedestrian application would require.

Because trench drains often sit in high-traffic areas, periodic clearing of debris from the grate is important maintenance, since a clogged trench drain during a heavy storm can quickly redirect water exactly where it was meant to be kept away from.
