What Is Shingle Curling?

Shingle curling is the upward warping or lifting of a shingle’s edges or corners, typically a sign of aging, inadequate attic ventilation, or in some cases a manufacturing or material defect, and it’s one of the more visually obvious indicators that a roof may be approaching the end of its service life.

This curling can take different patterns, with the edges lifting upward in one common form, while a different pattern involves the shingle’s entire surface cupping upward at the corners while the center remains relatively flat.

Because curled shingles no longer lie flat against the roof surface, they become more vulnerable to wind uplift and water intrusion at the lifted edges compared to shingles that remain properly flush.

Widespread curling across a roof, rather than isolated to just a few shingles, generally indicates the roof has reached an advanced stage of overall deterioration, making a comprehensive roof inspection worthwhile to assess remaining lifespan and plan for eventual replacement.
