What Is Lath?

Lath is the structural backing material installed over wall and ceiling framing to provide the physical surface that wet plaster grips onto and adheres to, essentially serving the same foundational role for traditional plaster construction that drywall panels serve in modern homes, except lath itself carries no finished appearance and is entirely concealed once the plaster coats are applied over it. Without lath, wet plaster would simply have nothing to hold onto and would slump or fall away from open wall framing before it could cure.

Historic wood lath consists of narrow strips of wood, typically around an inch and a quarter wide, nailed horizontally across studs and joists with deliberate small gaps between each strip. As the wet scratch coat of plaster is troweled on, some of the material squeezes through these gaps and, once it cures, forms small mechanical protrusions called keys on the back side of the lath that physically lock the plaster in place, resisting the pull of gravity far more effectively than adhesion alone could manage. This keying mechanism is the entire structural principle behind why lath-and-plaster construction actually stays on the wall for a century or more.

Metal lath largely replaced wood lath during the early to mid twentieth century, offering a woven or expanded metal mesh that provides similar keying capability while being faster to install, more fire resistant, and less susceptible to the wood shrinkage and movement that could sometimes crack overlying plaster. Metal lath remains in active use today, particularly for stucco exterior applications and certain interior plaster restoration projects, even though gypsum board has replaced it for the vast majority of new interior wall construction.

Why Is Lath Important?

Understanding lath matters enormously for anyone dealing with plaster problems in an older home, because the most common and serious plaster failure isn’t cracking in the visible finish coat but rather the keys behind the lath breaking off, a condition plasterers call key failure, which allows entire sections of ceiling or wall plaster to separate from the lath and potentially collapse without much warning. This is a genuinely different problem from a surface crack and requires different diagnosis and repair, sometimes involving plaster washers that mechanically reattach sagging plaster back to the lath and framing rather than simply patching the visible surface.

Recognizing whether a home has wood or metal lath also matters for renovation planning, since removing plaster to expose wood lath sometimes reveals genuinely charming, salvageable material that some homeowners choose to preserve or even showcase, while extensive water damage to either lath type usually indicates that both the lath and the plaster above it need replacement rather than surface-level patching. A contractor or inspector who understands lath construction can distinguish between cosmetic settling cracks that pose no structural concern and genuine key failure that represents an active safety hazard.
