A grade beam foundation is a foundation system that uses reinforced concrete beams at or near ground level, connected to piers, piles, or caissons below, to support a structure on sites where shallow spread footings aren’t adequate.
This system essentially replaces conventional footings with a beam-and-deep-support combination, distributing loads through the beam to whatever deep elements carry the actual weight into the ground.

The void space typically maintained beneath the grade beam on expansive soil sites is a critical detail, deliberately preventing the beam from ever bearing directly on soil that could otherwise push against it as it swells seasonally. Because the deep support elements carry virtually all the structural load, the grade beam’s own design focuses primarily on spanning and load transfer rather than resisting soil bearing pressure directly.
