A foundation anchor bolt is a steel bolt embedded in a concrete foundation, extending upward to secure the wooden sill plate and framing above to the foundation wall or slab beneath it. These bolts are among the most critical connections in a home, resisting uplift, sliding, and lateral movement during wind or seismic events.

Anchor bolts are set into the concrete while it’s still wet, which means their placement has to be planned and checked carefully before the pour, since correcting a misplaced bolt afterward is far more difficult.

Seismic retrofitting often involves adding supplemental anchor bolts to an older foundation that either lacks them entirely or has too few by current code standards, typically drilled and epoxied into the existing concrete.
