What Is an Exterior Drainage System?

An exterior drainage system is a network of pipes and gravel installed along the outside of a foundation, typically at footing depth, intercepting groundwater before it can accumulate against the wall and force its way inside.

This system is most commonly installed during original construction, when the foundation wall is already exposed and excavated, making it far less disruptive and expensive at that stage than as a later retrofit.

Because it addresses water before it ever contacts the foundation wall, an exterior system generally provides more thorough protection than an interior alternative installed after the fact.
