Why Are Construction Specifications Important?

Substituting a cheaper product without approval can trigger rejection during inspection or a dispute with the owner over quality. Specs and drawings are meant to work together, and conflicts between the two are usually resolved in favor of whichever is more restrictive.
Construction Specifications vs. Construction Drawings
Drawings show what a building looks like and how its parts fit together dimensionally; specifications describe the quality and performance standards for the materials used. A drawing might show a wall assembly, but the specification is what confirms exactly which insulation product and R-value goes inside it.
