What Is a Joist?

A joist is a horizontal structural member, typically running parallel to others at regular spacing, that spans between supports to carry the loads of a floor or ceiling, transferring that weight to the walls, beams, or foundation elements beneath.

Joists form the fundamental structural framework beneath most floors and above most ceilings in residential construction, whether made from traditional dimensional lumber or modern engineered alternatives.

The specific size, spacing, and material of a joist depend on the span it needs to cover and the load it’s expected to carry, meaning longer spans or heavier loads require larger, more closely spaced, or more robust joists.

What Types of Joists Are There?

  • Floor joists supporting a level’s floor surface
  • Ceiling joists supporting the ceiling below and sometimes the attic floor above
  • Engineered I-joists offering longer spans and consistent performance
  • Rim joists enclosing the perimeter of a floor system

Why Are Joists Important?

As the primary horizontal load-carrying members in most floor and ceiling systems, joists directly determine how solid a floor feels underfoot and how much weight it can safely support, making their sizing and spacing a genuine structural calculation rather than a matter of convention alone. Undersized or improperly spaced joists can result in a bouncy, springy floor or, in more serious cases, excessive deflection that damages finishes above.

Modern engineered joists have increasingly replaced traditional solid lumber in many applications, offering longer spans, more consistent quality, and reduced susceptibility to the shrinking and warping that can affect natural lumber over time. This shift toward engineered products reflects genuine performance advantages beyond simple cost considerations.

Joist vs. Beam

A joist is typically a smaller, more closely spaced member spanning between larger supports. A beam is a larger structural member, often supporting multiple joists at an intermediate point, carrying significantly more concentrated load than an individual joist typically handles.
