What Is a Protection Board?

A protection board is a rigid panel installed over a waterproofing membrane specifically to shield it from physical damage during backfilling, when sharp rocks, construction debris, or heavy equipment could otherwise puncture or tear an exposed membrane before the wall is even fully covered.

Unlike a dimple board, a basic protection board doesn’t necessarily provide the same drainage air gap, focusing purely on physical protection rather than water management.

Because membrane damage during backfilling is difficult to detect once the wall is covered, this protective layer offers valuable insurance against a failure mode that might not become apparent until years later when a leak develops.

A protection board absorbs this risk, taking the physical impact so the membrane underneath remains intact through the backfilling process.

Many modern products now combine protection and drainage functions into a single panel, offering both the physical shielding of a basic protection board and the water management benefits of a dimple board in one installed product. This added protection is a relatively small cost given how much it safeguards the larger waterproofing investment. This modest expense reflects sound risk management given what’s actually at stake.
