What Is a Foundation Drainage Mat?

A foundation drainage mat, sometimes called a dimple board or drainage board, is a plastic panel with a dimpled or channeled surface installed against a foundation wall’s exterior, creating a gap that lets groundwater flow freely down to the footing drain rather than pressing directly against the wall.

It’s typically installed over waterproofing membrane, adding a mechanical drainage layer that works alongside the membrane’s water-resistant barrier.

What Does a Foundation Drainage Mat Involve?

  • A dimpled or channeled plastic panel
  • Installation directly against the waterproofed wall
  • A connection routing collected water to the footing drain
  • Filter fabric on the soil-facing side in some products

Why Is a Foundation Drainage Mat Important?

By creating a free-draining air gap between backfill soil and the foundation wall, a drainage mat significantly reduces the hydrostatic pressure that would otherwise build up directly against the waterproofing membrane, extending the system’s effective life and performance. This combination of waterproofing membrane plus drainage mat is generally considered a more robust below-grade water management strategy than either component alone.

Because the mat channels water down to the footing drain rather than letting it pool against the wall, a properly installed drainage mat also reduces the burden on the waterproofing membrane itself, since the membrane faces far less standing water pressure than it would without this drainage layer in place. Some drainage mat products also include an integrated filter fabric layer, simplifying installation by combining two protective functions into a single product applied in one step. This combined approach simplifies installation while still delivering the same reliable drainage performance overall.

Foundation Drainage Mat vs. Foundation Drain

A foundation drainage mat manages water at the wall surface, channeling it downward. A foundation drain, or footing drain, is the pipe system at the base of the wall that actually collects and carries that water away from the structure entirely.
