A stem wall is a short concrete wall extending upward from a footing to support the framing or slab above, commonly used on crawl space and some slab foundations to raise the structure slightly above grade.

It bridges the gap between the footing at frost depth and the finished floor level, providing both structural support and a barrier against ground moisture.

Why Are Stem Walls Important?

A stem wall’s height and reinforcement need to account for any soil pressure it might experience if backfilled against on one or both sides, similar to the considerations that apply to a full basement foundation wall, just at a smaller scale. Builders sometimes adjust stem wall height slightly during construction to accommodate unexpected grade variations discovered after the footing is already poured, within the limits the design allows. A stem wall is typically shorter, raising a structure modestly above grade for a crawl space or slab transition. A foundation wall, particularly for a basement, extends much taller, enclosing a full below-grade level rather than just bridging a small height difference.
