What Is a Raft Foundation?

A raft foundation, also called a mat foundation, is a single continuous concrete slab that spreads a building’s entire load across its full footprint rather than through separate footings at individual points. It functions like a raft floating on the soil, distributing weight broadly to reduce pressure at any one location.

Because the entire structure rests on one connected slab, a raft foundation behaves as a single rigid unit rather than a collection of independently settling supports.

What Does a Raft Foundation Involve?

Why Are Raft Foundations Important?

On sites with weak, soft, or highly variable soil, individual footings might settle unevenly relative to each other, but a raft foundation ties the whole structure together as one rigid unit, resisting differential settlement far more effectively. This makes raft foundations a common choice where soil bearing capacity is too low for economical spread footings, even though the amount of concrete and reinforcement required makes them more expensive than a conventional footing system.

Because a raft essentially acts as one enormous footing, engineers can also use it to bridge over small pockets of particularly weak soil that would otherwise require costly localized remediation before an isolated footing could be placed there safely. Construction sequencing for a raft also differs from conventional footings, since the entire slab is typically formed and reinforced as one large, coordinated pour rather than a series of separate placements.

A standard slab foundation is a simpler, typically thinner concrete pour designed mainly to support a home’s own weight on reasonably stable soil. A raft foundation is a heavier-duty version engineered specifically to spread loads across weak or variable soil conditions that a standard slab wouldn’t safely handle.
