What Is an Isolated Footing?

An isolated footing, also called a spread footing, is a single, independent concrete base supporting one column or point load, rather than running continuously beneath a wall. It’s shaped to spread that one concentrated load over enough soil area to prevent excessive settlement.

Because each isolated footing works independently, engineers size every one individually based on the specific column load it carries, rather than applying a single dimension across the whole foundation.

What Does an Isolated Footing Involve?

  • A square or rectangular concrete pad
  • A single column or post resting on top
  • Sizing based on the column’s load and soil bearing capacity
  • Reinforcing steel within the pad

Why Are Isolated Footings Important?

Because an isolated footing carries a concentrated point load rather than a distributed wall load, it needs to be sized carefully to the specific soil bearing capacity beneath it, or the column above risks settling unevenly relative to the rest of the structure. This matters especially in buildings with a mix of wall and column supports, like a home with an open-plan living area supported partly by interior posts, where uneven settlement between footing types would show up as sloping floors.

Because these footings act independently of one another, a soil variation affecting just one footing location, such as a buried tree root or a pocket of loose fill, can cause that single point to settle differently than its neighbors, which is why soil testing at multiple points across a site is often worthwhile. Depth requirements still apply just as they would to a continuous footing, since an isolated footing set above the frost line is just as vulnerable to frost heave.

Isolated Footing vs. Continuous Footing

An isolated footing supports one specific point load, while a continuous footing runs beneath an entire wall, distributing load along its length. Buildings frequently use both together depending on where loads concentrate versus where they’re spread evenly across a linear wall run.
